When it comes to dressing for your portrait session, think about what you want the end result to look like. Here are a few suggestions ...
Newborns & Babies
It is best to photograph newborns as soon as possible, preferably before the 7-10 day mark, when they are still sleeping quite a bit. These photos turn out best when the baby is naked, but a diaper or onesie can work as well. You are more than welcome to bring accessories for these shots. Some examples would be knit hats, headbands, fluffy blankets, etc. For the comfort of Mom and Baby, these sessions will be done in your home. The time length of newborn sessions will vary, depending on feeding schedules. For babies under 6 months of age, I prefer to photograph them while they are sleeping. While sleeping, babies are much easier to "pose" and put into different positions.
Children
When dressing children, try to avoid clothing that is "busy" or has printed decals/characters since it will take focus away from your child. I always recommend jeans or khakis with a solid colored shirt. Make sure the clothing fits the child and isn't too small or too large. Feel free to be creative! We do a combination of fun/funky and traditional. If you would like portraits of siblings together, try to dress them in similar tones to avoid "clashing."
To help the session go smoothly, please have children fed and rested. Feel free to bring snacks for your child in the event we need to "bribe" them :) Children usually behave best at the beginning of a session when the surroundings are still new to them. As they begin to get comfortable, their attention spans diminish. I will try to take the "posed" shots first and then move on to more candid photos while they are exploring. I have found that I can get the most amazing shots when children are behaving naturally.
Families
Following some of the guidelines above, try to dress your family in similar tones. You don't necessarily need to match everyone, but try to coordinate. For example, everyone can wear jeans, but different colored tops or funky shoes. Let your personality show through!
Maternity
Simple is best! These photos turn out great when we can really focus on the belly. Think solid tank-tops, bandeau tops, or your husband's button down shirt. Maternity sessions are typically done around 36 weeks, but I will do them whenever you are most comfortable!
